Start with the daily routine

The best wheelchair is not simply the lightest, cheapest, or highest rated chair. It is the chair that fits the user, the caregiver, the home, the car, and the daily routine.

Start by writing down where the chair will be used most: inside the home, at appointments, in parking lots, on sidewalks, during travel, or for longer seated periods. That list quickly narrows the choices.

Separate transport from independence

A transport chair is usually pushed by a caregiver and has smaller rear wheels. A manual wheelchair can often be self-propelled because it has large rear wheels with push rims.

If the user wants to move independently, a standard manual wheelchair may be the better starting point. If the main need is short trips with a caregiver, a lightweight transport chair may be easier to lift and store.

Check fit before features

Seat width, seat depth, footrest position, armrest style, and weight capacity matter more than a long feature list. A chair that is too narrow can be uncomfortable; a chair that is too wide can be harder to push and position.

When in doubt, compare measurements with a clinician, therapist, or mobility equipment specialist, especially for daily or long-term use.
